Sober time calculator

Free sober time calculator: pick your quit date and see your total alcohol-free time in years, months, and days, plus the running day count.

Pick your quit date to see your sober time.

A sober time calculator translates the date you stopped drinking into a calendar-readable total. This free calculator gives you both the single day count and the years-months-days breakdown, so you can write your total on a card, screenshot it, or share it in whatever format your community uses.

This sober time calculator translates a quit date into something readable: not just "502 days," but "1 year, 4 months, 17 days." Useful when you want to write the number on a card, mention it in a meeting, or screenshot a milestone.

How this calculator works

The total day count is floor((today − startDate) / 86,400,000 ms), with both dates normalised to UTC midnight. The years-months-days breakdown is walked by calendar: count whole years from start date forward, then whole months, then the remaining days. That avoids the drift you'd get from dividing by an average month length.

Sober time calculator: questions people ask

How is sober time measured?

By calendar, the gap between the date you stopped drinking and today. This calculator shows it both as a single day total and broken into years, months, and days so you can read it either way.

How do I calculate sober time in months and years?

Walk forward from your start date one calendar year and one calendar month at a time until you reach today. The calculator does this for you so the month count lands on the same day-of-month each step, which is more accurate than dividing days by 30.44.

Does sober time reset if I have a slip?

That is your call. Some people reset their start date; others keep the original date and treat the slip as part of the run. There is no universal rule. The calculator just reflects whatever start date you enter.

How do I calculate sober time from a quit date?

Enter the quit date in the date picker. The page shows the total in days and the calendar breakdown updates as you type. The picker is capped at today so a typo cannot land you on a future date.

What is the longest sober time someone has tracked?

Many people in long-term recovery count in decades. The calculator handles any past date you give it; the math is the same whether your start date was last month or thirty years ago.

Can I include the day I quit in my sober time?

This calculator counts whole days since the start date, the day you quit is day one in progress and reads as 0. If you prefer to count the quit day itself, mentally add one to the result.
