Alcohol calories calculator

Free alcohol calories calculator: enter volume, ABV, and drink count to see kcal from ethanol in any drink, using the standard 7 kcal-per-gram conversion.

Enter volume and ABV to see calories.

An alcohol calories calculator shows the energy content from ethanol alone, at the standard 7 kcal per gram conversion. Enter a drink's volume and ABV and the calculator returns its alcohol-derived kilocalories. Note: it does not include calories from carbohydrates in beer, sugar in cocktails, or cream in liqueurs, those add up on top.

This alcohol calories calculator gives you the energy content from ethanol alone. It uses the standard 7 kcal-per-gram conversion. What it does not include: calories from carbohydrates in beer, sugar in cocktails, or cream in liqueurs. If the on-bottle figure is higher than this calculator, that's where the difference lives.

How this calculator works

The math: grams of ethanol = volume (mL) Ã- ABV ÷ 100 Ã- 0.789 (the density of ethanol). Kilocalories = grams Ã- 7. We use 7 kcal per gram rather than the more precise 6.93 because that is the convention used on nutrition labels and in public-health writing. Multiply by drink count for the total.

Alcohol calories calculator: questions people ask

How many calories are in alcohol?

Pure ethanol contains about 7 kilocalories per gram. So a drink's alcohol-derived calories equal its grams of pure alcohol multiplied by 7. A 5% beer (355 mL) contains about 98 kcal from alcohol alone.

Does this calculator include calories from sugar and carbs?

No. It counts only the calories from ethanol. Beers, cocktails, mixers, liqueurs, and ciders add calories from carbohydrates, sugar, or cream that this calculator does not include. For a full label, check the drink's nutrition info.

How many calories in a bottle of wine?

A 750 mL bottle of 12.5% wine contains about 519 kcal from ethanol. A bottle of 14% wine is closer to 581 kcal. Add a small allowance for residual sugar, dry wines are mostly just the ethanol figure.

How many calories in a pint of beer?

A UK pint (568 mL) of 4% beer is about 125 kcal from alcohol. Many beers add another 50 to 100 kcal from carbohydrates, so the on-bottle figure is typically higher, around 180 to 230 kcal for a standard pint.

Is 7 kcal per gram exact?

Approximately. The more precise figure is 6.93 kcal per gram, but 7 is the convention used on nutrition labels and in most public-health writing. The difference is under 1% and well within the precision of self-reported pour sizes.
